Michelle Marshall is an Interior Designer with a deep interest in Historic Preservation. Because I value the responsible and thoughtful intersection of the old and new, I always look for ways to incorporate the two harmoniously in my work. I plan to complete more projects that explore various approaches to re-use and restoration.
Projects that I find most fulfilling are ones that have a positive impact on local communities and societies as a whole. Some of my best work evolved in a gastro-flea market project in the context of a low-income housing community in a veritable food dessert. The task of addressing community needs while implementing good design that reflected the spirit of the neighborhood was extremely compelling and has fueled my desire to do more social design.
My body of work tends to be very organic in form, using a variety of textures and colors materials. The blending of styles, rather than a mono-stylistic approach, seems natural to me. I avoid the usual and the symmetrical, often employing the element of surprise. Discovering new ways of designing, using fresh materials and creative techniques, reflects my view of diversity as a fundamental value.
I work well in a collaborative environment where I can generate and translate concepts to good design with my peers. In this context, I easily identify people’s strengths and harness them to their furthest potential. I  am curious, observant, tactile, resourceful, and goal oriented - always looking for new forms that bring about practical solutions.
What I love most about interior design is its potential to affect individuals so profoundly. It is an underused resource for promoting wellness, community, and beauty. I want to be a part of a design movement that explores inclusive, sustainable, simple, and practical ways to affect the world for the better.
